Nördlingen 2027
St George’s: A Church Built by Citizens for Citizens
In 2027, Nördlingen commemorates the start of construction of its late Gothic hall church, St George’s, 600 years ago. In 1427, the citizens decided to replace the old church, which had become too small, with an impressive new building. During the imperial city’s economic and cultural heyday, they created a striking expression of civic confidence and prosperity. St George’s attracted important master builders and artists and remains one of southern Germany’s outstanding sacred buildings. Despite the Reformation and later alterations, its rich artistic treasures have survived. With its ‘Daniel’ tower visible from afar, the church still shapes Nördlingen’s skyline. As the foremost landmark in the Ries, it helps define the identity of an entire region.

FAITH: Anniversary Service
Without the town council’s resolution, St George’s would not exist. Countless stories linking people to this church would never have been told. We will hear a selection of them during this service. Music is provided by the Knabenkapelle Nördlingen and the ‘Bach Cantata Sing-Along’ project choir. Enjoy choral singing? Bach cantata enthusiasts – and anyone who would like to become one – have the opportunity to take part in the cantata performance. Information from Clara Ernst: clara.ernst@elkb.de.
